teen panic attacks therapy

What Do Panic Attacks Look Like in Teens:

Panic attacks are an intense and sudden feeling of fear or discomfort, which usually includes at least four of the following:

  • Increase heart rate, feeling like your heart is racing or pounding, palpitations
  • Sweating (even when it is not hot) or getting the chills
  • Chest pain
  • Shaking or trembling
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Feeling dizzy, light-headed, or faint
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling like you are choking
  • Feeling like you are losing control
  • Feeling like you are having a heart attack or dying

If you read that list, you might be thinking that a panic attack has got to feel like one of the worst things in the world. Well, you’d be right.  In fact, it feels

so bad, that teens (and adults) with panic attacks often end up in the emergency room, as panic symptoms mimic those of heart disease, among other medical problems.

So Are Panic Attacks Real or Not Real?

People with panic attacks often shy away from telling anyone, for fear of being thought of as “crazy” or “dramatic.”  But, just like the medical issues that share these symptoms, panic attacks are real!  Unlike some medical problems that share these symptoms, panic attacks are very treatable.  Therapy can help teach your teen how to manage panic attacks and even learn how to overcome them. If you think your teen is struggling with panic attacks, please call and make an appointment today.  With therapy, there is hope!
