The New Year is seen by everyone as a time for fresh starts and new beginnings. Across the world there are many traditions of setting goals and resolutions for the upcoming year. We all have good intentions to become our better selves and achieve things we have dreamed of. Setting goals for ourselves promotes personal growth, creates motivation, and increases chances of success in life. This post will cover why goals are important, strategies for setting effective goals, and how to stay on track throughout the year.
Why Goal Setting is Important
There are many mental health benefits to setting goals for ourselves. Goals give us direction and focus, create motivation, hold us accountable, and increase our personal growth. Having direction and focus prevents aimless wondering in life. With goals, we can have a clear focus that leads to better decision making and prioritization. When we know what we want to achieve, we can also feel more confident in our daily decisions.
Many people who have mental health challenges also have difficulty creating and maintaining motivation in life. Setting goals helps create that motivation that many of us seek each day. They also help maintain motivation by having clear direction. Each day we make strides towards our goals, no matter how small, we mentally benefit from those wins and stay energized with motivation to continue.
Setting goals also helps hold us accountable to ourselves and to others. If we choose to share our goals with friends and/or family, we can create a system of support to achieve our goals. The more support, or accountability, we have in our lives the better we tend to feel mentally and emotionally.
One of the main reasons many people set goals for the new year is to increase their personal growth. Goals challenge us to grow, learn new skills, and push boundaries in our lives. We can see great growth and transformation when we regularly set and achieve goals in our lives. This personal growth can also play into creating and maintaining motivation in life.
How to Set Effective Goals
Setting goals can seem daunting at first. Maybe you have tried to set goals in the past but found them to be ineffective or difficult to follow. Or your goal was not specific enough and you felt as though it was too broad to actually achieve. If that is the case, then setting SMART goals will be helpful for you. SMART goals are:
- Specific: Be as specific as you can possibly be with your goal. The more distinct you are with your goals, the more clarity they will have and the easier it will be to track them.
- Measurable: Making your goals measurable allows you to track the progress you are making easier.
- Achievable: There is nothing wrong with shooting high for your goals, but ultimately you want to make sure the goals you are setting you will actually be able to achieve. Nothing is worse than setting a goal and realizing later it is not as realistic as you initially thought it would be.
- Relevant: The goals you set should be about you and for you. They should be relevant to your life and in line with your identified values.
- Time-bound: When setting goals, it is helpful to set a time frame around when you would like to achieve your goals. This helps hold you accountable to your goals.
Here are two examples of goals, one being vague and the other a SMART goal.
- I want to get fit.
- I will exercise three times a week for 30 minutes each session for the next three months.
As you can see, the first is very vague and is not focused enough to motivate. The second one is so specific and broken down and you are more likely to follow through with that goal because it is clear and focused. It is important to know exactly what you want to achieve and how you will achieve it. You can even break bigger goals down into smaller goals, making them even more achievable.
Strategies for Achieving Your Goals
Once you have set your goals, it can be helpful to identify strategies to help you achieve those goals. Here are four strategies you can use as you tackle your goals this year.
- Break Goals Down into Smaller Tasks
- Some of the goals you may set will take weeks or months to accomplish. If this is the case, then it can be helpful to break those bigger goals into smaller tasks to be completed daily or weekly. By doing this, you are creating more opportunities for you to receive positive feedback towards your goals.
- Example: You set the goal of wanting to run a marathon by the end of the year. You can break that goal down into weekly training goals that you can work towards before achieving your larger goal.
- Create an Action Plan
- For each of the goals you set for this new year, develop a detailed plan for how to achieve each goal. Identify what you will need to meet your goal as well as anyone who you may need to ask for help. Outline how you imagine you will best be able to achieve your goals. You may even look into time management strategies and ways to stay organized while working on your goal. It may be helpful to invest in tools like planners, apps, or spreadsheets to help keep you on track.
- Establish Habits
- As you work towards achieving your goals, setting habits that support your goals can be beneficial. Habit building helps make progress feel less daunting and feel as though it is going quicker.
- Examples: exercising at the same time every day, meal prepping for healthier eating, or starting each day by checking your calendar to keep on time for appointments.
- Track Progress and Celebrate Milestones
- Keeping daily or weekly track of your goals can be helpful to maintain motivation. You can keep a journal, use an app, or create a spreadsheet to track your goals and see the progress you have made. By tracking your goals you can celebrate the small wins you make along the way, which helps boost your morale and keeps you going.
